11thth Annual Cavalry Days held June 6-7, 2008. This “History You Can Touch” event has something for every member of the family to enjoy. Take a stroll down historic Main Street, but be aware of the crossfire when the Sherriff attempts to stop the bank from being robbed. Cowboys, cavalrymen, and ladies in long skirts will set the historical stage of Sturgis in the 1880’s.
A chuck wagon dinner followed by a tour of Custer’s Camp take you back to a time when the Black Hills was unsettled territory. Kids can join the in fun of an old’ fashion-fishing derby, gunnysack races, and making crafts and toys used over 100 years ago.
The weekend is packed with Native American presentations, a quilt show, Vintage Fashion Show, period music, and much more. The next time you sing the “Star Spangled Banner” know it was at Ft. Meade that the move to make it the National Anthem originated. Join in the weekend celebration of days gone by, and help solve the mystery of the window peeping Major of 1879.
Come back to Sturgis, September 8-9, 2008 for the National Sheep Dog Trails. In conjunction with the national competition the local Sturgis Dog Classic invites residents from around the Black Hills region to join in the fun. The dogs can strut their stuff in the “Pet Parade” demonstrate their amazing tricks, and kids love to try their “mutton busting” skills.
Whether you are a serious canine trainer or “Fido” is one of the kids this family fun event sponsored by the Sturgis Area Chamber of Conference and Visitors Center is one you will not want to miss.
