Spring Riding Itinerary

SPRING TIME MOTORCYCLE RIDING ITINERARY FOR THE STURGIS® MOTORCYCLE RALLY™



  1. SCENIC RIDE | Rapid City - Hill City

    • 26 - 27 miles | Approx. 35 minutes.
      1. Start early and take Highway 16 (Mount Rushmore Road) SOUTH out of Rapid City.
      2. Stay RIGHT when signs indicate a left hand deflection into Keystone.
      3. Stay LEFT at Three Forks (HWY 385/16 Junction), maintaining the course into Hill City, SD.

  2. BREAKFAST | Slate Creek Grille

    • Slate Creek Grille is located on Museum Drive, just off of HWY 16 when you enter Hill City from the NORTHEAST.

    • Breakfast Served - 7 AM to 11 AM

    • In addition to a hearty breakfast menu, Slate Creek Grille offers Dry Creek coffee and a wide selection of latt&eacute, espresso, cappuccino, and other coffee drinks. Eat heartily for the long ride to come!


  3. SCENIC RIDE | Hill City - Deerfield Lake

    • 16 - 17 miles | Approx. 50 minutes.
      1. In front of Slate Creek Grille is the intersection of Main Street (HWY 16) and Deerfield Road. Turn RIGHT off of Main and take Deerfield Road NORTH towards Deerfield Lake.This ride will take you straight through the scenic Central Hills countryside of rolling hills and open meadows.
      2. Upon reaching Mystic Road, veer LEFT to continue on Deerfield Road into the Black Hills National Forest.
      3. Continue on Deerfield Road until reaching Deerfield Lake.

  4. DEERFIELD HIKE | Deerfield Lake Loop Trail

      1. To reach the trailhead, continue on Deerfield Road—passing the lake on your left—until you can veer right onto South Rochford Road.
      2. Continue wrapping around the NORTH side of the lake on South Rochford Road, turning right on NF 417to park down by the lakeside.
    • The Deerfield Lake Loop Trail is 10 miles long, and it provides excellent opportunities to spot wildlife and take in the scenery of this beautiful Black Hills body of water. Your hike can be as long or as short as you like. Plan accordingly to leave yourself a 1 HOUR ride before lunchtime.


  5. SCENIC RIDE | Deerfield Lake - Rochford

    • 11 - 12 miles | Approx. 45 minutes to 1 hour
      1. Leave the lakeside on NF 417 and turn right to take South Rochford Road NORTH/NORTHEAST.
      2. Continue on this winding route until you reach Rochford Road.
      3. Turn right and proceed into downtown Rochford.

  6. LUNCH | The Moonshine Gulch Saloon

    • The Moonshine Gulch Saloon in the center of charming Rochford, SD can't be missed. It's a cultural experience worth stopping for, and the owner makes a mean cheeseburger.

    • If it's late enough in the spring season, you might have the luck to catch a live music performance taking place on the front porch, with patrons spilling out into Rochford Road to enjoy the acoustics.


  7. SCENIC RIDE | Rochford - Spearfish

    • 38 - 39 miles | Approx. 1 hour and 10 minutes
      1. Return to your bike and continue on the road passing in front of the Moonshine Gulch Saloon—it has now turned into North Rochford Road.
      2. Continue NORTH on North Rochford Road, past Nahant and Dumont.
      3. When you come to HWY 85/14A, turn left and head WEST towards Cheyenne Crossing.
      4. At Cheyenne Crossing, turn RIGHT to take Spearfish Canyon (HWY 14A) into Spearfish, SD.
    • Both Dumont and Spearfish Canyon make for beautiful and scenic rides through the Black Hills countryside. Be sure to make a stop or two along the way to take in special points-of-interest. The Roughlock Falls Nature Area, considered one of the most beautiful spots in the Black Hills, is just beyond the junction at Cheyenne Crossing.


  8. DINNER | Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant

    • Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant is located on the NORTH side of Spearfish, opposite of where you'll enter town from Spearfish Canyon (14A) in the SOUTH.

      1. Turn LEFT on East Colorado Boulevard, and then veer right onto Main Street.
      2. Take Main Street through the center of downtown and continue NORTH until reaching Old HWY 14, just before exiting onto I-90.
      3. Turn LEFT and find Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant approximately a half mile down.
    • At Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant, you'll discover the best authentic Mexican food and drink located this far north of the border. The restaurant is family run, and the atmosphere is colorful and inviting.


  9. RETURN RIDE | Spearfish - Rapid City

    • 47 - 48 miles | Approx. 45 minutes
        1. Take Old HWY 14 NORTH to I-90 and exit EAST to Rapid City.
        2. Stay on I-90, passing Whitewood, Sturgis, Piedmont, and Summerset, before taking Exit 57 back into Rapid City, SD.
